Guerilla Vision | Recipe
My introduction to the advertising world in London.
I moved down to London in the late 00s after a period in Wolverhampton, Bristol, and Chester. Up until this job I had mostly worked on and off as a freelancer and made up the short fall with various temp jobs. This was the break I needed.
MTV Army Shoot
I started out as many do as a Production Assistant or a runner to use a more post-production term. I went on to PA for Guerilla Vision on a handful of other adverts but sadly this one was the only one I took any BTS pics.
It was great fun and I went on and PA’ed for Gureilla Vision on a few more shoots around London. It helped to slowly break down the barriers and made entering the creative industry far less daunting.
Chandler’s Oil & Gas
A handshake in the rain with one of the partners outside their original studio base on Fulham Road and I was off to the races. It was a whirlwind and ended up being the catalyst for my journey to film school.
I had recently, at that point finished production on a short film and so I used that workflow on this. I started with a static animatic using board frames and also produced an animatic that really was just a way to house some testing, but also to show the team at Guerilla Vision that things were moving along.
The work had to completed in 6 weeks. I animated everything straight ahead and drew quickly, the rough animation/animatic was well received. I do remember showing one of the founders and he said “Great, you’ve got a lot of work to do…”. Back then I'd not heard of or even knew what a slap comp was but it turned out this was it.
The final spot. Traditionally animated and digitally finished and comp work in After Effects. The invoice for this job helped cover my first-year fees at the National Film and Television school that I would start in the new year that followed my time at Guerilla Vision.
247 Money Box
I don’t have all my files from these jobs anymore but I did save this, a series of pig designs and ideas for the advert. They originally wanted something in CG, at the time my skills were pretty novice but we were able to sway them with out cute little pig.
I had become proficient using Flash from an earlier gig and felt I could deliver the animation needed. It was the last time I used Flash and would ultimately shift to 3D work.

Random credit on this, appearing in front of the camera as an extra. Fun morning in London and a really interesting product. I believe it went out of business due to the rising popularity of the iPhone.
One World Wildlife
This is the only record I was able to find for this advert. It was a simple DRT that was broadcast on UK’s digital channels. I did some googling and the site is currently down, I guess people didn’t really donate.
Dr Pepper - The Pepperhood
I paid for film school doing little jobs like this. I was booked for a week in one of the final jobs Guerilla Vision did under that name, the next time I would work with them they would be called Recipe.
Recipe Advertising
During my film school days, Guerilla Vision outgrew its second home and rebranded itself as Recipe. I was able to continue to work with them on a couple of projects to help fill the coffers that were being drained from my studies.
I visited their new space several times. It was located a few yards from Oxford Street station. I would often pop in on the way to the tube, say hello, and raid their sweetie jars.
Crunchy Nut Flakes - Million Pound Drop
I was asked to help the in-house graphics team with CG direction and asset creation. I modeled and textured a series of new product packaging for the variations of the pack shot.
All assets boxes and bags were modeled, sculpted, and textured in Mudbox, back then it was a new bit of kit.
Motor 2 Go
Another quick job, modelled a couple of cars. Low poly, and we were able to get two cars from the initial model to keep costs down.
This was the last job I completed for the folks over at Recipe. A few months later I would be working in Soho for One of Us and finally, after years starting my career in film VFX.
