Cut my teeth as a generalist under the guidance of several, excellent mentors.
A decade ago I was part of a small team that helped bring Ben Hibbon’s vision to fruition, the fully animated sequence served to lay the frame work for the live action film.
I was studying at film school when I was coming to the end of my initial contract with One of Us and I was eager to continue learning, I mentioned to the supervisor that I had a good knowledge of Maya. I was immediately given some smaller tasks, here I created the UVs for the baby, cleaned up the skin weights, added a couple of wrinkle blends and overall polish on the character.
I was given a scene that needed some additional elements to be modeled from scratch, cleaning up outsourced models, creating the textures and more importantly animation. The pendant was a simple model, brought to life by the texture artist. The wooden Mannequins were animated and textured at the same time, it really was a baptism of fire - I loved every moment.
A bedroom set was next up, I quickly modeled the bed to try and fit into the design still. I used nCloth to drape the bedding and to create the pillows, super simple but it was all about getting these models out so I could pick up any extra tasks.
This was an interesting task, I was already assigned to the Horse to clean up the skin weights when the Supervisor asked me to create some textures for the mane. I scanned a couple of concepts from the art wall and projected the textures, a little clean up in Photoshop and they were slotted into the final render.
Again, some asset modelling here, first to create kings crown and to help improve the weighting around the daughters shoulder. Nothing huge but the work needed doing, it was a great project to be part of as a junior artist, met some incredible people.
