The Line Up
The next obstacle was to dissect the shot, analyse the plate for clues and generally play Columbo. The plate contained a multitude of information and I enjoyed piecing it all together.
The BTS clip showed the crash from an alternate angle. You can see the camera fly through the air and the Charger driving off after the smash. Extremely helpful to confirm the camera was on a tripod behind the Ford.
Following on from the proof of concept animation I did a static line up, this was to try and get the building, the road and the sidewalk that were modeled from the satellite imagery to match the photography.
The roto animation version. This was done so I could sanity check the line up, scale and lensing of the Maya camera.
The roto animation was pretty tight to have the option of doing a CG takeover.
The car’s trajectory on the road. It feels logical and sits roughly in the right place on the road.
There is a discrepancy between the roto animation and where the car finishes on the satellite image. I accepted I was not going to get a perfect lineup so, creative license took over here.
