Anna Karenina

Horse falls, scene transitions, and my first role in the VFX industry.

Joe Wright’s adaptation of Karenina was different and since the film all took place in an old theater, pre visualising certain shots were needed.

Working closely with the supervisor I quickly produced the visualisation work. I tried to add in green screens where it would be needed and provided measurements.

Quick mock ups of certain sequences really helped to show the director what was possible in the space and more importantly what was going to be a tricky setup.

This scene was unfortunately cut from the final edit, it’s a pretty common occurrence in visualisation work. I did several tests, layouts and animation for how these walls would tumble.

The main task on this show was to work out how we could frame the horse race. It was interesting exercise to create the edit in the opera house set.

This was the subject of extensive visualisation and carried through to final animation.

Multiple angles created a balancing act between camera placement and capturing a strong shot.

Always happy to lend a hand, I helped out one my work mates with modelling a basic train geometry for his projection work in Nuke.

This was a small shot but I had a lot of fun, I was able to use Houdini for the first time to render the forest. I modelled a selection of trees and textured in Mudbox. The final shot was lit and rendered using Mantra.
